What a visa officer is actually checking

What a visa officer is actually checking

A consular officer is not deciding whether you are a good person. They are working through a queue, and your application has a few minutes to answer three questions in a way that can be checked.

1. Is the purpose of the trip clear and consistent?

Every document should tell the same story. An invitation that names one set of dates, a hotel booking with another and a leave letter with a third does not read as three small errors — it reads as a file assembled to look convincing rather than one describing a real trip.

2. Can you afford it, demonstrably?

"Demonstrably" is the part people miss. Money that arrived in your account last week, from a source nobody can trace, is not evidence of means; it is a question. Consistent balances over a period, with a visible and explicable source, are.

3. Will you leave?

This is the one Nigerian applicants are examined on hardest, and the one most agencies never mention. Employment, business ownership, property, family responsibilities and a travel history of returning are all ways of answering it. The absence of an answer is itself an answer.

What this means for your application

Preparation is not decoration. It is making those three answers easy to find and impossible to doubt. That is the whole job — and it is why we assess a profile before we quote for it.
